This instrument is best used when more access is needed below the ribs and functions to create and maintain adequate access to the surgical field. This rib spreader has two arms, one of which can be adjusted to create the best fitting spread distance, as well as windowed blades to maintain uniform pressure over a larger surface area to reduce strain on the patient.

This instrument is ideally used in cardiothoracic surgeries to create and maintain a space between the ribs to allow clear access to the surgical field. These spreaders come with a traditional slight curvature to the arms giving them a contour that allows a more secure fit and hold. Bailey-Gibbon Rib Approximator w/ extended three-pronged blades, 6-3/4" (17.0 cm) Baily-Gibbon Rib Approximator is an instrument used in cardiothoracic surgical procedures. This rib approximator comes equipped with extended three-pronged blades which gives it better gripping ability during rib approximation. A ratcheting mechanism with a large dial are used to set the claws at variable spreads and then bring them closer together.
