This instrument is best used when more access is needed below the ribs and functions to create and maintain adequate access to the surgical field. This rib spreader has two arms, one of which can be adjusted to create the best fitting spread distance, as well as windowed blades to maintain uniform pressure over a larger surface area to reduce strain on the patient.

The ribbed handle increases gripping while the hooked blade allows for a stable hold on the scapula to give unobstructed access to the surgical field. This spreader-approximator is a multi purpose tool that can be used to separate the ribs to allow access to the surgical field by using the windowed lip blades. Uniquely, this instrument can also be used as an approximator to bring the ribs back to closure by utilizing the pointed hooks on the tip of each arm.
